I took this photograph on Sunday afternoon on May 28, 2000. This was a
great trip. I was up in Wilmington, NC at the WE Fest 2000 festival. I came
up to see my sons band, xbxrx, play at the festival. They also had another
band
of theirs, The Stuck-Ups, play but xbxrx was
a hit both in 1999 and in 2000 at
the festival. The Stuck-Ups would have been really great too if they had stayed
together. They were an awesome band to see live. I saw many bands play on
Saturday and Sunday nights, but during the day on Sunday I drove to the coast
and
took a ferry to Bald Head Island to see this majestic old lighthouse. While
the
lantern room looks centered in this photograph, it's actually "off centered"
when
viewed from the side. This photograph was taken from the ferry landing area
on the island.
I had to wait for about 45 minutes for the ferry to the island. It's a very
isolated
island with preservation as the key. There are no roads to the island and
while on
on the island you have several modes of transportation; foot, bike or golf
cart. Some
of the familys waiting for the ferry had been grocery shopping and had their
bags of
groceries with them. Some children had just been to a toy store and some were
talking about having a BBQ when they got home.
When I got to the island I chose to walk as my mode of transportation. It
was muggy,
hot and a thunderstorm was moving in. The sky was very cloudy but still somewhat
bright. It was a beautiful site when I finally got to Old Baldy. It's a magnificent
design
with stonework, wood and iron. The stairwell going to the lantern room is
made of
wood, very small steps and made for a "one way" trip. It is a no
passing zone for sure.
It was a tough trip up the stairwell, especially after my walk to the tower
and the heat of
a May afternoon. It was a great view from the top, simply beautiful. The last
8 feet or so
you leave a platform and have to climb a ladder straight up and through a
very narrow
"hatch" door to get to the top. There was a little girl crying as
her dad tried to talk her into
going back down the ladder. Since the lantern room is so small and the stairwell
ends
and then the ladder goes straight up, thus I believe the reason behind the
"off centered"
lantern room. Needless to say it's very interesting.
