We went to the North Shore late in the afternoon on Monday. We were at the Dole Plantation
for several hours, but had only planned on being there for 30 minutes or so. Ha Ha, it took both
of us about 60 minutes just to complete the "World's Largest Maze". Then we checked out the
gift shop, the different types and plants of Pineapples and a local's tent where they were selling
conch shells that you blow on. Of course I had to get myself one of those. We also bought chocolate
covered pineapple and boy that was really good! We dumped a lot of money in the gift shop, too
much money actually. It was fun except for the fact that it was VERY cloudy and we got rained on
while in the maze. By the time we left we had about 30 minutes of daylight left for the historical surf
town, and the north shore beaches. I really wish we had several more hours of daylight for the north
shore.

Rich and I were racing each other and I actually had found 5 of the 6 "areas", while he was at
4 of 6. I told him where one of the one's he was missing was and then we were both at 5. I
talked with him about where had we not gone and I, yes I, figured it out. I told him where we
needed to go to find the last one and he took off. He had opened his "maze map" and went right
to it. I found it on my own, well actually someone had cut through the maze and as time went on
many people did and it made a hole in the maze, so I also cut through. I guess we both cheated in
the end. Well,,,,,,we had been in the maze for just under an hour and it was time to get OUT!!
The maze is larger than 2 acres with about 1.7 miles in paths.

Rich in the maze, fixing his visor.

Me in the maze with my paper "Dole Plantation Maze" visor on and
all my camera (video and 35mm) equipment that I lug around everywhere, along with my water bottle back pack. Rich travels light instead.

A new baby pineapple starting to grow. How cute!

We had just missed all the blooms. That would have been beautiful to see.

A Dole Pineapple in the center of the maze. In the fields they are planted very close
together. From the helicopter tour you can see acres and acres of pineapples. When we
drove to the North Shore Beaches we drove through thousands upon thousands of pineapples.

I guess Rich DID stay too long at the Dole Plantation!!

Here are two photographs I took of the Dole Plantation from the Rainbow Helicopter Tour. In the photograph on the right
you can see the maze in the center.

It's open daily from 9am to 6pm and the parking is free. It costs $4.50 per adult and
$2.50 per child for admission into the maze. There are restrooms, a snack bar and gift shop.
It's about 10 minutes from the North Shore town of Haleiwa. From Waikiki take H-1 west to
H-2 north. Continue to the Kamehameha Highway and the Dole Plantation is on the right, about
40 minutes from Waikiki. You cannot miss it.
