I took this photograph from the tour boat that leaves Hilton
Head at Harbour Town
to see the dolphins at "the dolphin hole" in the Calibogue Sound.
It was taken during
Labor Day weekend on Sunday September 6, 1998 with me, my son Rich and his friend
Neil. We got to Harbour Town on Hilton Head only an hour or so before dark.
We met some of
the nicest people anywhere in Hilton Head, South Carolina. The area is simply
beautiful, the people
nice and the homes very expensive. Harbour Town is located at the south end
of Hilton Head
Island. The islands main road is the William Hilton Parkway (US Hwy 278). The
local Audubon
Society maintains the Newhall Audubon Preserve at the south end. There are many
native plants,
tagged and identified, at this end of the island of Hilton Head, along with
many trails. There is a
community at this end (south end) of Hilton Head called the Sea Pines. It is
the area's best known
resort and residential area. It is only accessible at two points, the Greenwood
Gate near Sea Pines
Circle, and the Ocean Gate on South Forest Beach Drive. It costs $5 for admission
to the
south end for those who are not residents or resort guests. There is a forest
preserve here with a
historic archaeological Indian area. There are many bike and hiking trails throughout
the south
end of Hilton Head. Picturesque and beautiful do not do this area enough justice.
There
are deer crossing signs all over, tourists every several feet and a lot going
on all the time.
Great little shops, food places, lots of trees and a great atmosphere in Harbour
Town.
We took a cruise from Harbour Town into the Calibogue Sound to the dolphin
hole. On the way to see the dolphins you pass by the Haig Point Rear Range Lighthouse.
I only had the chance to take two photographs of the lighthouse
because it was rapidly getting
dark and the boat passed by rather quickly. Well, the captain said he'd slow
down, and did, but it
could have been much slower for me. However, he did have to get to the dolphin
hole before dark
and we did experience a nice sunset. The dolphins were great and very entertaining.
I got some good
video but no good photographs because of how late in the day it was. Me, Rich
and Neil had a
wonderful time. It was a very relaxing trip to end an almost perfect day. It
would have been perfect
if I could have made it to the lighthouse itself. This entire area is very picturesque,
a must visit if you
are ever in this area.
Information about the lighthouse and Daufuskie Island:
The lighthouse was established in 1873 and it's a Victorian
style house with an active light. I could
not find any information about what type of lens it uses. It is located on Daufuskie
Island at the south
end of Hilton Head Island. The lighthouse is now privately owned and the house
is operated as a bed
and breakfast. You can get to the island from Shelter Cove Harbour using Adventure
Cruises. Up until
recently life on the Daufuskie Island was very isolated with no way to get to
the island other than by boat.
Horse drawn carriages take visitors around the island and to the lighthouse.
A few years ago a 400 ton
mansion from Georgia was moved, via barge, from St. Simon's Island to the Haig
Point Plantation.
