These photographs of the St. Simons Island Lighthouse were taken during Labor
Day
weekend on Saturday September 5, 1998. This was the first of 6 lighthouses
that my son
Richard, a friend of his Neil, and I saw during the Labor Day weekend of 1998.
We headed
off on an adventure over a 3 day weekend. Immediately after school me, my
son and his friend
left directly from their school. We headed from Mobile to the east coast of
Florida and then
headed up the Georgia coast, and later to South Carolina. We visited the Cockspur
Lighthouse,
(from the bridge), the Saint Simons Lighthouse, the Tybee Island Lighthouse,
the Morris Island
Lighthouse (from the beach), the Hunting Island Lighthouse, the Haig Point
Lighthouse, the Harbour
Town lighthouse and many other interesting places during these 3 days. It
was a great just "do it"
adventure for all three of us.
Information about the Saint Simons Island Lighthouse:
Directions: off of US 17 in Brunswick, take the Torres Causeway to Saint
Simons Island. After
the bridge going over the Frederica River, take a right on Kings Way. Stay
on Kings Way past
the blinking light at Sea Island Causeway and past the light at Frederica
Road. There is a small
airport on your left at this point. The next traffic light you take a right
on Mallory Street and then
proceed one block to Beachview and then go left. Go another 1/4 mile or so
to 12th Street and
then turn right. It's not very easy to find, but you can always ask for directions.
The island itself is
very beautiful and my son still says he'd love to live there one day.
