We were are the Dole Plantation longer than planned and we only had
about 30 minutes of daylight left when we got to the North Shore. I really
wanted more time just to visit the stores and shops in Haleiwa Surf Town.
We also wanted to have more time at Waimea Bay and Sunset Beach and
if we ever go back we'll plan at least one entire day on the North Shore.

This is the only photograph I got of Sunset Beach. I did also take one
from the Rainbow Helicopter tour. We got to Sunset Beach well after dark
but I wanted to stop anyway. Actually we drove past Sunset Beach
Elementary School and all the way to the Turtle Bay Hilton Country Club
in the dark before we realized we had gone way too far. Once we got back
to Sunset Beach I had to go in the water. I couldn't go all the way to Hawaii
and the North Shore and not go in at Sunset Beach. Rich stayed in the car while
I went in. There was a bad/strong undertow and I only stayed in for a few minutes.

Sunset Beach is a long beach and I am upset that we didn't spend an entire day along
here and at Waimea Bay. Both places are very beautiful too, some of which you can
tell from the above photograph. This was shot on a 30 second exposure using ASA 400
Kodak print film. Ah, for a few daylight shots................

Here's Sunset Beach from the helicopter. The area where I went in is in the
center of this photograph, just off the road. You can see Waimea Bay at the
top right of this photograph, just past the point. Sorry for the window reflection
on this photograph.

Sunset Beach is one of the longest sand beaches in O'ahu, running two miles in length
and 200 to 300 feet wide. It is good for swimming and snorkeling in the summer time,
but in the winter time it frequently has surf as big as 15 to 20 feet. There are lifeguards
on duty and picnic areas about. You need to be careful of the "Sunset Rip", a very strong
riptide current offshore. During the months of June through September be careful of the
stinging limu (seaweed). It is located off Hwy 83 on the North Shore, just east of Waimea.
