Ford Island from the helicopter. You can see the last U.S. Battleship,
the Missouri, where the surrender was signed by the Japanese ending WWII,
and to the right in this photo is the USS Arizona Memorial. I took this photo
on Thursday April 26, 2001. You can imagine the same view the Japanese
had on Ford Island during the attack. Imagine the ships all lined up along
Battleship Row here, all easy targets.
Leaning out of the memorial to take this photograph.
What's left of gun turret number two.
Facing the stern of the USS Arizona you see the what's in the left photograph.
The right photograph was also taken facing the
stern of the mighty ship. The oil you see in the middle of this photograph is
the ships blood. It has been leaking oil (an estimated
one quart per day) since December 7, 1941. From the air you can easily see the
oil slick coming from the ship. It is believed that
the oil is the ships tears and once the oil stops leaking, the souls of those
who lost their lives on the Arizona will finally be at rest.
I really wish it wasn't so windy and the harbor was calm so you could see the
ship better in the photographs because it is an awesome site.
Gun turret number two at the left and the commemorative flagpole, at right,
that was placed on the ship in 1950.
The Navy still flies a United States flag from the flagpole, which is attached
to the severed mainmast of the
sunken battleship.
